Great lash retention isn’t about finding one magical adhesive. It comes down to understanding how your adhesive, application, natural lashes and environment work together.
If your clients are coming back with more shedding than expected, don’t immediately blame the glue. Here are seven things every lash artist should check when troubleshooting retention.
1. Your Attachment
One of the first things to look at is how much of the extension is actually attached to the natural lash.
A beautiful set can still have poor retention if the attachment isn’t secure. The base of the extension should sit flush and have enough contact with the natural lash to create a strong bond.
Tiny bases, lifting bases and inconsistent placement can all lead to premature shedding.
2. Your Isolation
Good isolation isn’t only about preventing stickies — it also gives you the control you need for clean placement.
When lashes aren’t properly isolated, it becomes much harder to create consistent attachment and direction.
Slow down, isolate intentionally and prioritize clean application before speed.
3. You're Not Lashing Enough Natural Lashes
Coverage matters.
At StyleLash, our goal is to lash every healthy natural lash that can safely support an extension.
That includes baby lashes.
Baby lashes can absolutely be lashed when the extension is appropriately sized and weighted for that natural lash. Because these lashes are newer in their growth cycle, including them can actually contribute to better overall coverage and retention between appointments.
The goal isn't to overload immature lashes — it's to customize the extension to what each natural lash can safely support.
4. Your Adhesive Isn't Working the Way You Think It Is
Humidity and temperature affect how lash adhesive behaves, but there isn't one magical humidity number that every artist needs to achieve.
Understanding how your adhesive cures is much more useful than blindly chasing a specific percentage on your hygrometer.
If your adhesive is curing too quickly for your placement speed, you may experience poor attachment. If it's curing too slowly, you may struggle with movement and stickies.
Learn your adhesive rather than fighting your environment.
5. Your Adhesive Pickup Needs Adjusting
More adhesive doesn't automatically mean better retention — but neither does using as little adhesive as possible.
You need enough product to create a secure bond without leaving visible bulbs, clumps or excess adhesive.
Your pickup should complement your extension, application technique and adhesive.
6. You're Treating Every Client the Same
There is no universal lash set that works perfectly for every client.
Natural lash strength, density, growth patterns, lifestyle and desired look can all affect how you approach a set.
Strong lash artistry is about being able to look at the client in front of you and make educated decisions rather than simply repeating the same map and application on everyone.
7. You're Focusing on Speed Before Consistency
Speed comes with repetition.
When you're learning, your priority should be 100% clean application.
Every extension you apply should be intentionally placed, properly isolated and securely attached.
As your technique improves, your speed will naturally follow — and your goal should eventually be full, safe coverage of every lash you can lash.
Better Retention Starts With Better Fundamentals
When retention problems happen, go back to the basics.
Check your isolation. Check your attachment. Look at your adhesive behaviour. Look at your coverage. And most importantly, understand why you're making each decision during the service.
